Modern Art

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the changes in relation to art began to be noticed in Brazil. In the painting, the brushstrokes became looser, freer drawing, intensecolors and greater expressiveness.
Undoubtedly, the early twentieth century, Brazil was marked by events that changed his story as:
  • beginning of industrial production
  • the arrival of large numbers of immigrants from various countries;
  • an impressive economic growth;
  • great social changes resulting from contact with different cultures;
The first approach with the "expressionist art" was promoted by exhibitions, 1913, Lasar Segall, a Lithuanian painter who moved to Brazil in 1917, Anita Malfatti, who had been in Paris.
The famous week of Modern Art, held in February 1922, the Municipal Theatre of SãoPaulo, participated:
  •   painters, such as Di Cavalcanti, Anita Malfatti, Vicente do Rego Monteiro, Oswaldo Goeldi and Tarsila do Amaral;
  •   sculptors as Victor Brecheret;
  •   musicians, like Villa Lobos;
  •   writers, such as Oswaldo de Andrade, Mário de Andrade, Menotti Dil Picchia.
