Pernambuco Revolution


Today the school has commented on a possible holiday on March 6, 2012, tomorrow. The holiday was that the Carta Magna (sic), or rather the Magna Date. Many people are confusing the Magna Carta (not, Carta Magna) with Magna Date. After all, what is the date Magna? It's a holiday or not? These and other questions we shall now see.

What is  Magna Date?

Magna comes from the Latin meaning great. Date Magna is nothing more than the primary date that a municipality, a state, a country can have.

Why on March 6 Magna Date in Pernambuco?

March 6, commemorating the beginning of the Revolution of Pernambuco in 1817.The date was chosen among five historical moments suggested by the Archaeological, History and Geography Institute Pernambucano: January 13 (date of execution of Frei Caneca), January 27 (Restoration of Pernambuco), March 6 (Constitutionalist Revolution of 1817) 5 October (Convention Beberibe) and November 10 (Proclamation of the Republic in the Senate of Olinda ). The election was conducted by a popular research available in the media: Internet, radio stations in the state, urns and an interactive channel. The entire process was monitored by the Association of Broadcasting of Pernambuco. The date was chosen by consulting the population.

What was the Pernambuco Revolution?

The Pernambuco Revolution of 1817 broke out on March 6 and is a landmark in the fightagainst the oppression of the Portuguese Court. This historical movement was lead by Domingos, José Martins, with the support of Antônio Carlos de Andrada e Silva and Frei Caneca. They installed a provisional government that had proposed as the proclamation of the Republic, the extinction of abusive taxes and the drafting of a constitution to guarantee rights to citizens, such as the equality of all before the law, religious freedom and the media.

After all, a holiday or not?

The institution of Magna Date of Pernambuco, on March 6, had been targeted since 2009, questions about the obligation of being a public holiday. Is that the Federal Government, through the Law No. 9093 of September 12, 1995, authorized states to, in addition to national and religious holidays, establish a civil holiday for the celebration of his Magna Date. Traders disagreed with the new holiday because it would bring harm to the state economy. After extensive debate between parliamentarians and the Union of Commerce of Pernambuco, the State Government has determined that, from the year2010, Magna Data passed to be held on the first Sunday in March.
